Frequently Asked Questions
“Isn’t there a way to break the patterns of the past and tune into our highest future possibility – and to begin to operate from that place?”
C. Otto. Scharmer
How do I know if working with you is right for me?
You may already know that you would like to have an an initial call with me. If you’re not sure have a look at the frequently asked questions and if that fits with you consider booking a free 30 minute consultation. We can then assess what would work best for you and whether working with me will help you or your organisation get to where you want to be.
What is therapeutic coaching?
Counselling and Coaching are sometimes seen on a continuum, with counselling addressing problems from the past or present, and coaching taking a more proactive approach focusing more on the present and the future.
Therapeutic coaching has a developmental focus, and its emphasis is on change and action. Through one-to-one coaching sessions, it provides a safe, non-judgmental space in which to gain greater awareness.
This way of working offers you clarity about where you are now, where you would like to be and what is getting in the way. It can provide you with effective tools to work gently through any obstacles (which are often unconscious), so you can move towards the change you want to experience.
As a qualified therapist and coach, I am confident to work in the shared territory between coaching and counselling, creating a coherent, systematic framework for our work together.
In each session, I’ll take into consideration your needs, focusing on where you are when we meet. As the approach I’ll use depends on what you’d like to achieve, each of our sessions may be different, however, the combination of techniques allows us to explore your goals and concerns holistically.
How do I find the right coach, counsellor or supervisor?
How do you know who would be the right fit for you? Studies show that it’s the relationship between you and your coach that really influences whether coaching will work for you, whether you’ll get the results that you want.
So you can find out whether we can work together successfully, I offer a free initial 30 min session online. This shorter session allows us both to find out whether we’ll be comfortable working together. It will also allow us to discuss and agree the ground rules for future sessions.
And if you do decide to go ahead, I’ll make sure that our sessions are tailored to meet your needs, your preferences, your personality and your goals.
What is The Thinking Environment and Time to Think?
Time To Think is a leadership development and coaching process that helps people produce independent thinking in their organisations, teams and lives.
As a licensed Time to Think Coach, Facilitator, Teacher, and Consultant, all my work with individuals and groups is underpinned by a commitment to creating an environment for people to think well for, and as themselves.
How long do I need to work with you?
If you chose to work with me you may feel that you’ve got what you need after three or four sessions. Alternatively you may want to work with me for a longer period to deal with deeper issues. The length of the relationship is your decision.
We’ll usually work together for a long as you feel you need to continue. And to ensure things are going in the right direction we’ll hold regular reviews throughout the process.
How long and how often are sessions?
Sessions generally last 60 mins or 90 mins and take place once a fortnight, though you may prefer to meet once a month.
I also know that most people have commitments and can’t always make sessions in the daytime so I hold some sessions early morning and in the evenings up until 8pm. I also hold sessions on Saturday.
Do I need any special IT skills or software to work online?
If we do agree to work together using the telephone, e-mail or video conferencing I will discuss with you the ground rules and how you can keep our sessions safe and secure.
You don’t need any specialist skills or software and I’ll also help you with the IT aspects if you need any support.
What are the ground rules around confidentiality?
Everything you tell me will be treated confidentially. I’ve carefully chosen a location for our face to face work that will ensure your confidentiality is maintained. If we work together online I’ll use encrypted e-mail and secure video conferencing.
There may be some circumstances when I’ll talk to you about passing on information to outside agencies, for example, if I believe that you are in danger of harming yourself or others, or that a child is at risk. If this does happen I will always discuss the next steps with you first.
However, if you disclose information about certain criminal or offences I do have a legal obligation to tell outside agencies without informing you first.

Finding your purpose – Ikigai
Over the last year I’ve talked to a growing number of people who’ve got to a point in their lives where they feel the need to take stock. To look at what they’ve done so far, where they’ve been and where they’re going – a moment to wonder about jobs, relationships, and occasionally even what the point of it all is.
What’s happening to our attention?
I don’t know if it’s just me but I’m finding it harder and harder to give my full attention to just one thing; to tune out the background noise, sensations, intrusive thoughts and focus on what’s important to me.
We need more time to think!
This a plea that I’ve heard from numerous people over the years. Time to pause, to reflect, time to actually think about the next steps and maybe even spend some time thinking with others to come up with new creative and innovative answers to those tricky issues.
